Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the capital and largest city of Argentina as well as it s largest port.  Strongly influenced by European culture, Buenos Aires is sometimes referred to as the "Paris of the South". According to the census, the city proper has a population of 2,776,138, while the Greater Buenos Aires area has more than 12.4 million inhabitants (2001 census). The population of the city proper has been stagnant since the late 1960s, due to low birth rates and a slow flight to suburbia. The so-called "Reina del Plata" (Queen of the River Plate) is considered to be a city of European style, a characteristic that makes it very different from other Latin American capitals, more related to pre-Columbian traditions. Apart from the beauty of its architecture, parks and streets, Buenos Aires is an important cultural scenario. The people of Buenos Aires, called "porteños" (people of the port), are very warm and considerate people. The city is safe, the signals are very easy to follow, and there are different options as regards transportation, such as buses, taxis, subways, and trains.
